Food & Drink Prompts

Menu photography, café shots and beverage stills.

Food is the hardest subject for image models because appetite appeal comes from texture and steam, not colour. Every prompt here names a specific texture cue — condensation, crumb, char, gloss — because that single word does more work than any styling adjective.

Ice-Cold Beverage

/colddrink

A drink that visibly looks cold — condensation, ice, backlight.

Commercial beverage photograph of the attached drink in a tall glass, heavy condensation beading down the outside, ice cubes visible and catching light. Backlit from behind and slightly above so the liquid glows and the ice reads as translucent. Dark blurred background with a cool tone. Fresh garnish beside the glass. Shot on a 100mm macro lens at f/4, droplets sharp. Crisp, saturated, refreshing colour grade.

Menu Hero Dish

/menushot

A plated dish shot the way restaurant menus and delivery apps show food.

Overhead food photograph of the attached dish plated on a matte ceramic plate, shot from 45 degrees. Soft directional window light from the back left creating gentle shadows toward the camera and highlighting the texture of the food. Visible steam rising subtly. Rustic wooden table with a linen napkin and cutlery partly in frame, softly out of focus. Shot on a 50mm lens at f/2.8, the front of the dish sharp. Warm natural colour grade, appetising and true to life.

Café Atmosphere

/cafe

A warm, lived-in café scene with your product naturally placed.

Atmospheric photograph inside a warm independent café, the attached product on a wooden table beside a window. Soft afternoon light streaming in from the right, dust visible in the light beam. Blurred background of shelves, plants and a few seated customers. Shot on a 35mm lens at f/1.8, product sharp with the room falling away softly. Warm inviting colour grade with slightly lifted shadows. Candid, unstyled, natural feel.

Hot Coffee

/coffee

A warm coffee shot with visible steam and rich crema.

Close photograph of the attached coffee in a ceramic cup, visible steam rising and catching the light. Backlit from behind and above so the steam glows against a darker background. Rich crema texture clearly visible on the surface. Warm wooden table, a few scattered coffee beans. Shot on a 100mm macro lens at f/2.8, surface of the coffee sharp. Warm inviting colour grade with deep browns and soft highlights.

Fresh Bakery

/bakery

Bread or pastry with visible crumb, crust and flake.

Close photograph of the attached baked item on a rustic wooden board dusted with flour. Strong side light from the right raking across the surface to reveal crust texture, crumb structure and flaking layers. One piece torn open showing the soft interior. Shot on a 100mm macro lens at f/4. Warm natural colour grade, deep golden browns, slightly underexposed for richness.

Pour Shot

/pour

Liquid caught mid-pour with a clean frozen stream.

Commercial photograph of the attached drink being poured into a glass, the stream caught mid-air and frozen sharply. High-speed flash freezing every droplet with no motion blur. Backlit so the liquid glows and the stream reads as translucent. Dark gradient background. Small splash forming at the surface. Shot on a 100mm macro lens at f/5.6, stream and glass both sharp. Rich saturated commercial colour grade.

Shared Table

/tablespread

A full table of dishes shot from above, for restaurants and catering.

Overhead photograph of a generously laid table with the attached dish as the clear centrepiece, surrounded by complementary plates, bowls and glasses. Shot straight down at 90 degrees. Soft even diffused daylight with gentle shadows. Warm wooden table partly visible between dishes, not fully covered. Hands reaching in from two edges of the frame. Shot on a 35mm lens, everything in focus. Warm natural colour grade, abundant but not cluttered.

Dessert Close-Up

/dessert

A dessert shot with gloss, drip and layered detail.

Close photograph of the attached dessert on a small ceramic plate, shot at a low 20-degree angle to emphasise its height and layers. Soft side light from the left with a reflector on the right lifting shadows just enough to keep detail. Glossy surface catching a clean highlight, a slow drip forming down one side. Shallow depth of field, front edge sharp, background falling away. 100mm lens at f/2.8. Rich indulgent colour grade.

Meal Prep Layout

/mealprep

Containers or portions laid out cleanly, for health and delivery brands.

Overhead photograph of several identical meal containers arranged in a neat grid on a clean pale surface, each holding the attached dish portioned consistently. Even spacing between containers, straight rows and columns. Bright even diffused light with minimal shadows. Shot straight down at 90 degrees, 35mm lens, everything in focus. Fresh clean colour grade, natural food colours, clinical but appetising.

Working with food & drink prompts

  1. 1Photograph the real dish first, even badly. Food generated from nothing looks generic; food restyled from a real plate keeps the details that make it yours.
  2. 2Decide hot or cold before you pick a prompt. Steam belongs on one and ruins the other.
  3. 3Backlight is the default for food and drink. Put the light behind the dish and let it rim the edges.
  4. 4Name one texture cue — condensation, crumb, char, gloss. That single word does more than any styling adjective.
  5. 5Shoot at 45 degrees for plated dishes with height, and straight down for flat things like pizza and bowls.

Mistakes that ruin food & drink results

Front lighting

Lighting food from the camera position flattens it. Every appetising food photo you have seen is lit from behind or the side.

Steam on cold dishes

Leave the steam clause in and the model will add it to salads and ice cream. Remove it for anything served cold.

Generic garnish

Say “garnish” and you get a mint sprig on everything, including coffee. Name the actual garnish.
