Fashion & Apparel Prompts

Turn a hanger shot or flat lay into on-model, catalogue and lookbook images.

Clothing is the hardest category for an image model, because the one thing that must not change is the thing it most wants to reinvent. Every prompt here starts by pinning the garment — same fabric, same colour, same embroidery — and only then describes the model, the light and the setting. Get that order wrong and you receive a beautiful photograph of a garment you do not sell.

Real-Life Style Shot

/reallifestyle

Your flat-lay or hanger photo of a garment worn by a model in a real setting.

Fashion photograph of a model wearing the exact garment in the attached image, keeping the fabric, colour, embroidery and drape identical to the original. Natural candid pose, standing three-quarters to camera, weight on one leg, hands relaxed. Soft overcast daylight, no harsh shadows. Location is a clean modern street with a plain pale wall behind, background gently out of focus. Shot on an 85mm lens at f/2.8, framed from mid-thigh up. Neutral colour grading, true-to-life skin tones, no beauty retouching. The garment must remain the sharpest element in the frame.

Catalogue Shot

/fashioncatalog

A clean e-commerce catalogue image on a plain backdrop, consistent across a range.

E-commerce catalogue photograph of the garment in the attached image, worn by a model against a seamless light grey backdrop. Straight-on full-length framing, model centred, arms relaxed at the sides, neutral expression, feet slightly apart. Even studio lighting from two large softboxes at 45 degrees, plus a background light to keep the backdrop flat and shadow-free. Shot on a 50mm lens at f/8 so the entire garment is sharp from shoulder to hem. Colours accurate to the original fabric. Generous even margin on all four sides.

Style Lookbook Grid

/lookbook

A multi-panel lookbook layout mixing full outfit, detail and lifestyle shots.

Fashion lookbook layout composed of five panels in an asymmetric grid: one large hero image of a model wearing the item in the attached photo, two medium detail shots of the fabric and the footwear, and two smaller lifestyle frames of the same model seated and walking. Consistent soft daylight across every panel, same model and same styling throughout. Muted neutral colour palette. Thin white gutters between panels. Space at the top of the hero panel for a title. Photographic, not illustrated.

Ghost Mannequin

/ghostmannequin

The garment holding its shape with no model or mannequin visible.

Ghost mannequin product photograph of the garment in the attached image. The garment appears filled out and holding a natural human shape, but no model, mannequin or support is visible anywhere. Seamless pure white background. Even diffused lighting with a soft shadow beneath the hem. The inside back collar is visible through the neck opening. Shot straight on, 85mm lens at f/8, garment perfectly sharp and centred with even margins.

Styled Flat Lay

/flatlay

The garment laid out from above with props, styled like a magazine page.

Overhead flat-lay photograph of the garment in the attached image, laid on a textured linen surface in a warm off-white tone. Garment neatly arranged with one sleeve softly folded to suggest movement. Styled with two or three complementary props placed asymmetrically — a folded pair of sunglasses, a small ceramic dish, a sprig of dried foliage. Soft diffused daylight from the upper left, gentle natural shadows. Shot directly overhead, 50mm lens at f/5.6. Muted neutral palette. Clear negative space in the lower right for text.

Fabric Detail Macro

/fabricdetail

A close macro of the weave, embroidery or stitching that sells the quality.

Macro photograph of the fabric in the attached image, filling the frame with the weave, embroidery and stitching. Raking side light from the left at a low angle to reveal texture and thread depth. Shallow depth of field with the sharp plane running diagonally across the frame. Shot on a 100mm macro lens at f/4. True-to-life colour, no saturation boost. The fabric fills the entire frame with no background visible.

Working with fashion & apparel prompts

  1. 1Photograph the garment flat or on a hanger in even daylight first. A creased, badly lit reference gives the model licence to invent.
  2. 2Always open with the sentence that protects the garment. Everything else is negotiable; that is not.
  3. 3Use f/8 for catalogue work. Wide apertures blur hems, prints and stitching, which is exactly what a buyer is looking at.
  4. 4Keep one backdrop and one lighting description for your whole range. Consistency is what makes a set look like a real shoot.
  5. 5Generate a detail macro alongside every product shot. Texture is what answers the quality question that copy cannot.

Mistakes that ruin fashion & apparel results

Letting the garment drift

Without an explicit instruction to keep it identical, you get something similar — a changed neckline, invented embroidery — which is useless for selling the real item.

Shooting everything wide open

f/1.8 looks cinematic and blurs the print detail the customer is trying to see. Catalogue work belongs at f/8.

Mixed backdrops across a range

Ten garments on ten different backgrounds reads as ten different shops. Pick one and repeat it.

Vague props in flat lays

Asking for "props" returns clutter. Name two or three specific objects and place them asymmetrically.
