Anniversary cards are tricky because the obvious things ("I love you", "you're my everything") are already true and already said. The person reading the card knows you love them. What they don't hear often is what exactly you love, or what the past year actually felt like from your side.

Look back, then look forward

A good anniversary message usually does two things:

  1. Remembers something specific from your time together: a trip, a hard week you got through, a habit that became "yours".
  2. Says something about what's next: a plan, a hope, or simply that you'd like more of exactly this.

For example: "Five years ago I was too nervous to finish my vows. I've had five years to think about what I meant to say, and it's this: you make ordinary days feel like the good part. Here's to the next five, and the trip to the mountains we keep promising ourselves."

For your husband or wife

  • "Happy anniversary. This year wasn't easy, with the new job, the move and your dad's surgery, and we got through all of it on the same side. That's what I'm most grateful for."
  • "Happy anniversary to the person who still makes my tea exactly right without asking. Small thing. Not small to me."
  • "I didn't know marriage would be this much laughing. Happy anniversary, my love."
  • "Another year of choosing each other on good days and on the hard ones. I'd choose you every time."

For a first anniversary

The first year is full of firsts: the first home, first fight, first holiday as a married couple. Mention one.

  • "One year since you said yes, and I'm still surprised every morning that this is my life. Happy first anniversary."
  • "Our first year: one flat, two families, three burnt dinners and a lot of happiness. Happy anniversary."
  • "Happy first anniversary. Thank you for making 'home' a person and not just a place."

For a long marriage (10, 25, 40 years)

After many years, gratitude often says more than romance, though both are welcome.

  • "Twenty-five years, three children, and you still hold my hand crossing the road. Happy anniversary."
  • "We've grown up together, not just old together. Thank you for every one of these years."
  • "I'd marry you again tomorrow, though I'd ask for better weather on the day. Happy anniversary."

For your parents

Parents' anniversaries are a chance to thank them for what their marriage gave you.

  • "Happy anniversary, Ammi and Abbu. Watching the two of you taught me what patience and partnership look like. Thank you for showing us."
  • "Happy anniversary to the two people who still argue about directions and still never let go of each other's hands."
  • "Thirty years! Thank you for building a home we always want to come back to. Happy anniversary."

For friends or a couple you know

  • "Happy anniversary to two of our favourite people. You make marriage look like fun."
  • "Wishing you both a wonderful anniversary and many more years of adventures together."
  • "Happy anniversary! Still remember dancing at your wedding. Here's to many more years."

For a colleague

Keep it short and kind: "Happy anniversary! Hope you both have a lovely celebration."

What to avoid

  • "Ball and chain" jokes. Even meant kindly, they rarely read well in a card.
  • Mentioning past problems in a card others might see: "glad we're still together after last year" can sting.
  • Copy-paste poetry. One line from a song you both love beats a famous verse.

If you've forgotten until today

Don't pretend. "I nearly let today slip past, which says more about my calendar than about how I feel about you" is honest and still sweet. Then make the evening count.

If you'd like to put photos from your years together alongside the words, our anniversary card maker lets you add your own pictures and message and send it as a link.
