Congratulations Messages for a Graduation or a New Job (That Sound Like You Mean It)

What to write when someone graduates, gets a promotion or starts a new job: for your child, a friend, a colleague or your team, and how to congratulate without sounding generic.

"Congratulations!" is the right word. It's just not enough on its own. A graduation or a promotion is the end of a long stretch of work that the person mostly did alone: late nights, rejections, exams, doubts. The best messages recognise the effort, not only the result.

Name the effort, not just the achievement

Compare:

  • "Congratulations on graduating!"
  • "Congratulations on graduating! I remember you studying through Eid two years running. All of that was for today, and you've earned every bit of it."

The second one shows you saw what it took. That's what people remember.

For your son or daughter

  • "We are so proud of you. Not just for the degree, but for how hard you worked when nobody was watching. Congratulations."
  • "From your first day of school to today, it's gone by in a blink. Congratulations, beta. The world is lucky to have you."
  • "Whatever you do next, remember that you can do hard things. You just proved it."

For a friend

  • "YOU DID IT! All those all-nighters and the coffee intake that worried us all. Congratulations, graduate!"
  • "So proud of you. Let's celebrate properly, and then you can finally tell me what your dissertation was actually about."
  • "Congratulations! Wherever you go next, I'll be cheering loudly and slightly embarrassingly."

For a colleague's promotion

  • "Congratulations on the promotion! Nobody's surprised. You've been doing the job already for a year."
  • "Well deserved. The team is lucky to have you leading it."
  • "Congratulations! Thank you for everything you taught me along the way."

For someone starting a new job

  • "Congratulations on the new role! They've hired someone brilliant, and they'll work that out by Wednesday."
  • "We'll miss you here, but this is exactly the step you deserved. Go and enjoy it."

For your team or a direct report

When you're the manager, be specific about what they did. It's the most useful feedback they'll get all year.

  • "Congratulations on your promotion. The way you handled the client launch in March, calmly and without dropping anything, is exactly why."
  • "Delighted for you. You've grown so much this year, and it's been a privilege to watch."

When the result wasn't what they hoped

Sometimes the graduation comes with a disappointing grade, or the promotion goes to someone else. Don't pretend it didn't happen, and don't rush to "everything happens for a reason". Try: "I know it's not the result you wanted, and that's hard. What you did to get here still counts, and so do you."

Short messages for a card or WhatsApp

  • "Congratulations, graduate! So proud of you."
  • "Hard work, paid off. Congratulations!"
  • "Onwards and upwards. Congratulations on the new role!"
  • "The first of many big days. Well done."
